Upcoming BGS IC CAE Events - November and December 2016

Guest Lecture: Fundamental Problems of U.S. Intelligence and Strategy in Post-9/11 Afghanistan (Nov. 28th @ 4:30 PM)

After 9/11, how did the U.S. intelligence community and the National Security Council understand the attacks, define the enemy and craft a strategy?  How and why did the insurgency emerge?  Was the U.S. shift to a counterinsurgency strategy effective?  Mr. Bill Mankins, a former U.S. Army G-2 and a GS-15 senior civilian counterinsurgency adviser, will answer these questions and more based on his extensive experience conducting missions outside-the-wire in Afghanistan and Pakistan.  Mr. Mankins is also the founder and owner of Global Syndicate, which conducts research and negotiations in conflict areas around the world as well as training, analysis and strategy consulting.  The event is sponsored by Inner-Asian and Uralic National Resource Center at Indiana University, EKU Department of History, EKU Asian Studies Program, and the BGS IC CAE.  IC CAE Scholars will receive one (1) point for attending this event.  Please see attached event-specific flyer for more information.

Security Studies Workshop (Morehead State University; Nov. 30th @10:30 AM)

Morehead State University (MSU), which is a BGS IC CAE consortium member, is hosting the next BGS IC CAE workshop.  Topical areas of the workshop include foreign policy issues, aging weapon systems, and privacy and surveillance.  Lunch will be provided to all attendees.  Please contact Dr. Michael Hail (m.hail@moreheadstate.edu) or Ms. Ashley Taulbee (aktaulbee@moreheadstate.edu) to register for the event or if you have any questions (if you are an EKU affiliated individual, please see specific instructions below).  Please register by November 22nd if possible for logistical planning purposes.  IC CAE Scholars will receive two points (2) for attending this workshop.  Please see event-specific flyer for more information.    

Specific Instructions for EKU Affiliated Individuals:Transportation will be provided from the EKU Stratton Building to the workshop.  Therefore, EKU students, faculty, and staff will need to contact Dr. Brian Simpkins (brian.simpkins@eku.edu) to register for the event and indicate whether they will be utilizing the provided shuttle.  Please register by November 22nd for logistical planning purposes.

Intelligence and Security Career Panel (Dec. 1st @ 1:00 PM)

The BGS IC CAE is hosting the fall College of Justice and Safety career panel.  The career panel will include representatives from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA)/High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA), Kentucky State Police – Intelligence Branch, Kentucky Office of Homeland Security – Kentucky Intelligence Fusion Center, and G4S Secure Solutions.  Each panelist will provide a short overview of their career, their respective agency, and their job functions as well as answer any student questions.  IC CAE Scholars will receive one (1) point for attending this event.

3rd Annual Homeland Security Research Showcase (Dec. 7th @ 4:30 PM)

The Homeland Security Degree Program at EKU hosting the 3rd Annual Homeland Security Research Showcase.  The showcase, consisting of both poster and oral presentations, provides an avenue for undergraduate students to demonstrate their work and experience communicating their research with the broader community.  As in previous showcases, a panel will judge the poster and oral presentations in order to award first place plaques in each category as well as the Dr. Norman Spain Excellence in Research Scholarship.  IC CAE Scholars at EKU will be part of the showcase by participating in the poster and oral presentations.  IC CAE Scholars will receive one (1) point for attending this event and an additional two (2) points for completing a poster or oral presentation.  Please see attached event-specific flyer and program for more information.
