BGS IC CAE Hosts Social Networking and Intelligence Workshop
On October 6, 2017, the Bluegrass State Intelligence Community Center of Academic Excellence (BGS IC CAE) hosted it first intelligence workshop of the 2017-2018 academic year. Hosted by Eastern Kentucky University (EKU), the workshop focused on intelligence and investigations in relation to social networking. The workshop was facilitated by Mr. Eric Long, who is a law enforcement instructor (with previous law enforcement experience) with the Kentucky Department of Criminal Justice Training (DOCJT). The workshop provided the seated audience of ~80 individuals a better understanding of web-based social networking and presented law enforcement techniques on how to navigate and conduct investigations via social networking websites. The audience also gained an understanding of the Dark Web, which contains content not indexed by conventional search engines and is where criminal activity is persistent. As part of the workshop, audience members utilized laptops and tables under the direction of Mr. Long to access websites and to learn investigative techniques. Audience members included individuals from BGS IC CAE affiliated universities (EKU, Kentucky State University, Marshall University, and University of Kentucky) and professionals from agencies at the federal, state, and local levels.
